Happy New Year 2008 - Year of Rat

Today is the last day of year 2007. I would think that today would be the busiest day for those business owners, companies, corporate and organizations which financial year falls on the last day of the year as to review their whole year business achievement. Those employees who works for them are striving to improve their own performance in order to get a better bonuses and also at the same time to hope for a chance of promotion.

Students whom had long holidays would resume schooling in the next few days. Parents are to increase their expenses in buying new school uniforms, shoes, stationeries, bag and paying school fees for their children. The teachers are going back to workplace for preparing the studies material of the new school term. Shoppers are having their year end sales in clearing their old stock.

Hotels and pubs are the places for celebrating the countdown and welcoming the new year of 2008. Some of the companies or organizations would have their annual dinner tonight in hotels or restaurants.

Tonight’s New Year Eve is a great day and will be celebrating by people of all races, culture and religions in the world. Here I would like to greet of us a Happy New Year 2008 and May God Bless All of Us.

The sequence of 12 astrology animals is . Rat ranks number 1 in the 12 calendar animals. There is a related story for children. Once the God of Heaven wanted to choose 12 animal names as the sequence of the calendar. He announced to hold an animal racing to determine the order. When the racing date is closing, Cat forgot the time and asked Rat the schedule. Alert Rat gave Cat the wrong time on purpose. Smart Rat stayed on the horn of Ox while crossing the river, then jumped over the bank to reach the final line to win the champion. Cat missed the racing time and swear to kill Rat for generations. That's why Cat always chase Rat forever.

Chinese New Year formally commences at the beginning of Spring. Hence, it is known as the Spring Festival. It is a time to cast away the bad blood of the previous year and wish for good fortune in the coming year. Unlike the western calendar, the Chinese have their own lunar calendar which revolves around the moon. 2008 is the year of Rat in Chinese Calendar beginning on 7th February 2008 which is the first day of Lunar Calendar and also the day the Chinese celebrating their New Year.

Here I wish all of you a wonderful and prosperous year 2008, the year of rat.

A Million Ringgit Evening Together

Tonight indeed a joyous night as 26 of us (18 adults + 8 children) had gathered together to share the joy and happiness at my house for solid 3 hours starting at 6.00pm. We had potluck and this is a very first time I had this type of food arrangement at my home as usually I would leave it to the caterer. Due to inexperience, I am actually anxious to know whether the food is enough or not..but thank God we have more than enough.

My house is usually quiet except at times with laughing or crying sound of my Rachel & Moses....but tonight it is filled with array of great sound of joy and happiness all around. We had a sumptuous dinner that lasted about 2 hours. I observed everyone was busy serving themselves with food and at the same time catching-up with each other on the latest news upfront. Then, we quickly cleaned up and Ivy was the head girl for dishes cleaning (TQVM lovely dear & sisters) assisted by all the ladies. At least now…my wife knows that I have befriended with good people so that next time, it shall definitely be easier to get Visa approved or renewed by just mentioning some of the good new names. Hehehe !

Ivy lead a game for the Children…”Musical Piggy passing”. The children enjoy the game very much. All are winners and were given special gifts prepared by Ivy.

This was followed by gift exchange among children…guess what,…it was conducted by Heroes as the “Santa”.

We concluded our lovely gathering with a group photo (taken by my wife). I hope this tune-up gathering will serve as the momentum for the grand Reunion 2008 in Sibu on 8th February 2008.

Oops…nearly forgotten an experience on the video conferencing over YM with our
Chairman, Ah Pat…though the line is not very good but it was a good start.

Once Upon A Time in 1992

I am actually in the midst of completing my photo scanning task, probably 500 pieces or more...hopefully all could be completed by 31/12/2007 just in time for my new year countdown.:)

Well, I came across this old photo...about 15 years back...yeap it is a 1992 photo with our Miss Liew being the 1st Chair Lady for our Reunion, in fact 2nd Reunion.

If you closely observed the photos...so if we want our girls to come in batallion, then we may need a Chairlady instead of Chairman..from the photo: 9 boys vs 11 girls.

Talking about the past Chairman/ladyship, I managed to take out the old records as follow;

1990 - Thadeus Ling Allu (this was a Christmas gathering at Ted's house)
1992 - Ms Liew Siaw Chen
1994 - Joseph Sia
1995 - Ms Kiu Leh Ning
1996 - Miss Tiong Kiong
1997 - John Wong Tieng Ing
1998 - Paul Ting a.k.a Mr. Tee
1999 - David Kuok a.k.a Dave
2000 - Tiong Kwong Siong
2001 - Allen Ngang
2002 - Stephen Yii a.k.a mygreatbuds
2003 - Wong Kieng Thai
2004 - ??? (please help...as this memory sector is faulty)
2005 - Daniel Kong
2006 - William Lee
2007 - John Fam ( ???)
2008 - Patrick Ling a.k.a Pat
2009 - ? the nomination is open now...

Just be reminded that we have an unwritten rule...everyone has a chance to be the chairman/lady as no past chairman/lady can be re-elected as everyone has only one chance. Minus the 16 past organising chairman, we still have probably 400 candidates to choose from...hehehe..(not to be too optimistic..Malaysian oldest official record is only 110 years old ?...with average Malaysian vital age is 78 years old +- 10 years...we can probably have 60 more chairman/ladyship...so better grab for early slot for more senang arrangement...before we are getting too old...hehehe)

I am looking forward to see who is the chairman/lady on year 2020 (when I am aged 49 years old), 2050 (aged 79 years old), 2070 (100 years old)...:)

BTW, I would like to propose a special award for our friends...those who have attended all the Reunion Gathering (never miss a single session).

Amstrad CPC Games

I got an email from Mr Tee recently about Fruity, that addictive Amstrad game all the computer club members were crazy about, so I thought I'll do this post to bring everyone down memory lane.

At the SHS Computer Club back in the 80's, apart from the green screen ICL machines (on which we learned our WordStar and DBase II), there were also a few Amstrad CPC 6128 computers, which were very popular mainly because we could play games on them :)

One of the earliest game we had was Fruity. The game basically involved trying to gobble up all the fruits at every level without getting caught by the monsters. if you eat certain fruits you'll also get to throw a ball which will kill one of the monsters.

Well, thanks to advances in technology, nowadays you can basically emulate an Amstrad CPC computer on your PC. One of the most popular emulators around is WinApe, which you can get here.

After you have downloaded the emulator, go to this link to get the Fruity game. You can also get all the other games like Bomb Jack, Sorcery, Commando, Who Dares Wins, etc on the same site.

Ideas for 20th School Reunion

Greatbuds and gang in Kuching discussion on the above got me thinking, why not?

Why don't we go in our school uniforms? I was a prefect for a few short weeks in Form 6 and I still can fit into my prefect white trousers. I still have the prefect neck tie. Also the prefect badge (I think).

It'd be nice to see some ladies in skirts ha ha.

Anymore ideas to make the reunion a little bit lively?

How about quiz on "how well you know your alma mater"?

Or votes like "least changed person"? "Most changed person"? Physically, behaviorally and morally? Ha ha.

How about inviting our ex-teachers who still live in Sibu? It has been 20 years, I bet some of them has since retired and would welcome a social outing with their beloved ex-students who have not given them any trouble in school.

Me suggest only... Me cannot be committee member. Armchair critic only ha ha.

Contribution From The Heart For Our Alma Mater

One item that Pat has not reemphasized was the collection of fund to be donated to our Alma Mater. Frankly, I like the idea when it was brought up at the kopi-o corner at Puchong sometime back in Nov 2006 when Pat was also officially installed as the Chairman for Reunion 2008.
Well, it is a straightforward with no G string attached as sincere contribution is deeply appreciated and encouraged. I had for the last 1 week promoting the ideas to whoever I met (our schoolmates of 8890 of course..but definitely not like the China man on the street offering face reading service). So far, the response is encouraging, I have collected RM50.00 from Seng Yaw and Jacky Pui respectively this afternoon..so total is RM100.00.
Our modest aim is just to raise at least RM1,000.00 for the school (looks like it is just piece of cake...we could easily raise RM2,000.00). All the names of the contributors will be named in the letter to the current principal of SHS. Hey, there is no limit or requirement in the contribution from 1cent to unlimited...it is just from your heart...but for those who wish to donate 1 cent, he/she must do it before 31/12/2007 as if not, coming new year 2008, it may not be a valid currency denomination to use.
So what do we do with the fund ? As of now, I am proposing to buy reference books to be placed in the library. If more, then a desk top computer for the school ? On the 1st page of the book, we will put SHS Alumni 8890 chop to reflect our contribution....you may propose your ideas for final decision by our Chairman & committee...but as for now..our concentration is on fund raising.
So how do you pass the money ? well, for those not attending the Reunion (seriously only due to more important thing to do..like you are getting married in outstation etc)...you may pass the money to Pat, Ivy, Heroes or myself or those person you really trusted with your life and importantly he will attend the reunion 2008 to pass in the money. :)
For those attending the Grand Reunion 2008 on 8th February 2008, we will collect your donation there and then...cheque is also acceptable but not credit card or charge card.
Let's encourage each one to make this event a menaningful successful contribution from the bottom of our heart.
Pass the "fire" on... thank you thank you thank you.
**** "G" stands for gimmick.:)
**** Organising committee shall not be responsible or held accountable whatsoever for any person(s) who solicit funds or inpersonating our cause for this solicitation or by deception or malicious acts or whatsoever that may cause losses to any person(s) in name or monetary or whatever mode. Ardy In Kuching with Ivy & Geng

At 8.00 a.m sharp this morning (yesterday), I received a reminder from Ivy on tonight's (last night) date with Ardy at Kubah Ria, Matang. However, I was unable to turn up for the meet up much I would like to as tonight is also the final night for my carolling practice (as missing out the last 2 practices).
At 5.30pm...it was raining dog & cat in Kuching City again as I recalled the last proposed meeting in Kuching with Ardy also accompanied with dog & cat raining style. Thank God this time, it stopped at around 6.30pm but I am not available for the meet up.
But then again, God's merciful and loving,...as He knows that I wish to be with my old mates...though, I had a two hours singing practice...these old mates are still at Kubah Ria chit-chatting all night and still there when I called up them at about 10.15pm (I believe the Almighty had kept them entertained with their updates on each others).
So, I proposed to meet up at 2nd place, The RAIN...almost immediately they have agreed including Ivy !
Here it is...the one of the photos taken by Ted (the other two...need time to upload, but I am tired as my watch is showing 12.47am..so forgive me for just putting up this one).
In all, 5 of them were at Kubah Ria...Ted, Raymond, Ardy, Heroes and Ivy.

At RAIN, though only a short hour, I believe we have a great time..talking on how great the reunion 2008 is going to be...Believe it or not..there is a proposal to dress in school uniform to the reunion and there is a grand prize for best dress/shirt ...Hehehe...oh yes...there is also a proposed visitation to our Alma Mater on 8th February..wearing school uniform ?? :)

Further, a event for bachelor classmates to rekindle possible love flame.. or those wanted to reignite the old flame...

The rest, I leave to Ivy, Heroes, Ted, Raymond and Ardy to elaborate....

(BTW, this Saturday, there will be another meet up as Thomas Romeo and Chuan Yew shall be in the city. Those interested, please call Heroes or Ivy.)

G8Buds Mid-Week Get-Together

Early this morning...I reminded my lovely friend not to forget the date tonight via SMS. She replied that she remembers and had all gear up (permed eye lashes, pluck her hair legs..not forgetting the armpit). We are all very eager for the evening as it was quite a while since our last meet up at Coffee Beans.

A great evening indeed for 6 of us. We chat all type of topics and it is a good midweek break for me at least....releasing tensions and breathing fresh air plus a lot of laughing (good for health). (Mr. Tee, you missed this one..leh ! Don't keep using Shimono..)

Actually, we came out to meet Ing Hee who is holidaying in Kuching. For me, I have not seen her for a long long time...at least 10 years. She looks fit as usual but definitely now more lady like :)

We have also passed 10 reunion tickets to her to sell to our ladies friends in Sibu. This time..as we are on the way back, I told Heroes that it will be a much balanced event compared to yesteryears. Wulalala !
Hey, Ah Jing is the first person to confirm and paid cash for 2. Well done, friend, a real COO's material. So, who is next ? (Committee members not counted, ok ?) Hansac ? Warhammer ?
Judging from the feedbacks, we are raising our target...at least 80 ! (husbands/wives) if plus kids...I think 150 ! (As Hansac is bringing his wives/kids, I will bring my girlfriends...soo lan bo soo bin...jangan kalah, mesti ada gaya, mutu dan keunggulan !)
For those have not decided to join...my advice to you is
YOU ARE GOING TO REGRET IN YOUR LIFE...DON'T WAIT.. WE NEVER KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT YEAR...(we must remember Frankie in this Reunion !)
BE THERE ON THE 8TH FEBRUARY, rain or shine..no monies...just borrow from big ears around..
Those decided to join, please shout in the shout box or put your names in this blog...

The Girls' Side of the Story

Form 1H

Form 4 Science S

Some of my St.E ex-classmates may kill me for putting up these photos, but I thought you SHS boys would like to see how we looked like in Form 1 and Form 4.....plus, you guys have posted so many of your old days photo I was getting jealous...and I meant to beat Suhardy to the Form 1 photos!

Who can you recognise? Especially the Form 1 photo...

Yesteryears

Can some of you guys remember this. Can you recognize each one of them. I found this inside my old photo album. When I saw this, goshhhh...... how much different we that time compare to primary students nowadays.
Thier names?????? I only can remember a few like Leonardo, Helmi, Lai Mujiburahman, Hartidi, Frediel, Chua Eng Chiang, Thomas Hew, Jimmy Ting, Sufian, Ariffin, David Hii, Eleu, Bartholomew, Adrian Wong, Mark, Barnabas Tiong, Zachary Ong, Frankie, Gerald Lim, Peter Jim, Saing, Simon Ting, Daniel Kong, Mohd Yusry, Anthony Ting, Mulyadi, Joseph Sia, Louis Wong. Pat, is that you in the photo?
Those are the time when we like to play one arm sword, not allowed to sweat, like to eat Mohd Yusry's nasi lemak, wear short pants, seniors among the juniors but never bullied the junior, canning infront of the students is allowed and Brother Albinus is the sensitive name to be heard.
Please correct me if I'm wrong guys.
Later I will post my class photo Form 1 and 2.

Welcome Newcomers!

A WARM welcome to newcomers on this blog, like Vincent Wong...and Anthony Ting (Kung Kion). And also welcome some of you SHS8890 boys&girls who visit the blog (as indicated by traffic records shown on Feedjit) but just have been a tad shy to announce your arrival.

If you're not sure how to put a comment, just put a query on the shout-out box and our dear Pat will help you out.

When Is The Turn For Malaysian Beauties ?

India & China have shown the way...I hope the boleh spirit could be achievable here ...

Miss Zhang is a very lovely lady (isnt't it ?) and answer the question very well to the applause of judges...

For some of us who may not be following this Miss World event, this short news will definitely keep you up-to-date plus the photos, you may view here: http://news.yahoo.com/photos/ss/events/lf/120107missworld;_ylt=AtJ0F0JwFYQsAbZOg54snJ32_sEF

by Peter Stebbings Sat Dec 1, 11:27 AM ET
SANYA, China (AFP) - Pre-contest favourite Miss China won the Miss World 2007 title in her own country late Saturday, much to the delight of the audience, in front of an estimated two billion viewers around the globe.

Twenty-three-year-old Zhang Zilin was crowned the winner in Sanya, China. Miss Angola came second and Miss Mexico third at the beauty pageant, held on the southern holiday island of Hainan, dubbed China's answer to Hawaii.

Viewers in 200 countries were expected to tune in to watch the show, which saw Miss China take the crown ahead of 105 of the world's most beautiful and talented women.

The audience in the 2,000-capacity Beauty Crown Theatre, specially built for when Sanya first hosted the event in 2003, roared in delight as Zhang was crowned the winner at the end of the two-hour-long contest, which was conducted mainly in English.

The secretary from Beijing was the pre-contest favourite with British bookmakers, along with Miss Dominican Republic.

At 182 centimetres (six feet), Zhang was also the tallest contestant.

"There are 1.3 billion people behind me," she said during the interview stage of the contest, referring to China's population.

"If I win I want to become a link between the Olympic Games (in Beijing next year) and the Miss World Organisation."

"I want to use the power and beauty of Miss World to support those in need," she said, speaking throughout in hesitant English, adding a few words in Chinese.

Zhang earlier told the contest her favourite pasttimes were the 100-metre hurdles and the high jump.

Fireworks exploded above the crown-shaped theatre, where visitors had paid up to 300 dollars for tickets, after the popular decision was made.
