Amstrad CPC Games

I got an email from Mr Tee recently about Fruity, that addictive Amstrad game all the computer club members were crazy about, so I thought I'll do this post to bring everyone down memory lane.

At the SHS Computer Club back in the 80's, apart from the green screen ICL machines (on which we learned our WordStar and DBase II), there were also a few Amstrad CPC 6128 computers, which were very popular mainly because we could play games on them :)

One of the earliest game we had was Fruity. The game basically involved trying to gobble up all the fruits at every level without getting caught by the monsters. if you eat certain fruits you'll also get to throw a ball which will kill one of the monsters.

Well, thanks to advances in technology, nowadays you can basically emulate an Amstrad CPC computer on your PC. One of the most popular emulators around is WinApe, which you can get here.

After you have downloaded the emulator, go to this link to get the Fruity game. You can also get all the other games like Bomb Jack, Sorcery, Commando, Who Dares Wins, etc on the same site.

I downloaded the emulator and one game. How to decompress the *.dsk file into *.bas file?

Hi William, I got the pic off Wikipedia :)

To run the games, first run WinApe.exe Then, click on the disk icon at the bottom of WinApe to open the dsk file of the game you want to play.

Type CAT on the Amstrad screen in WinApe to see the contents of the disk. Usually, you just need to type something like RUN "FRUITY.BAS to run the game. Note : to get the " symbol on the Amstrad screen, you need to press Shift and the 2 key on your PC keyboard.

Amstrad still exists, but they no longer make computers.
